a Ghostbird berry in Hoklo, Tatokem in Amis
Some call me Birdsweet, or white flower plum
Depending on what you call me, I know
I can guess what place you're from
In early winter when tobacco is picked and sweet potatoes placed in rows
I have berries to sweeten your woes
And fried in sesame oil, stewed in porridge, or cooked in egg soup
You'll have to stomach the bittersweet taste of my leaves in your food
But maybe when you leave the soil and your home
Move south and run up north, travel and roam
From time to time when it gets tough and things are as bad as they can be
